Wacky Wednesday: The New Math

Skipper is fairly independent when it comes to homework so when he asks me to help him, I know he needs it. On Monday night, while I was cooking dinner, a large sigh came from the kitchen table.

“Mom, I need help with this question.”

“Okay, what is it?”

A field is 50 metres long and 25 metres wide. How many laps around the track does Peter need to run if he wants to run 1500 metres? I asked in class but my teacher said, ‘It’s right there. Go back and read it again.'”

Now I know his teacher well, and I’m sure that this is not exactly what happened. To me, Skipper’s problem was obvious.

“Honey, the field is rectangular, isn’t it?”
“Yes.”
“And you know that a track is oval, right?”
“Yes, and it doesn’t give any information about the track!”

Yup, my son is the son of a runner.
